Thanks to mistacat at wodehouse, I present this wonderful bit of Wodehouse/Wilde crossover.

From Picadilly Jim by P. G. Wodehouse:
Ann smiled delightedly. It was so typical that his father should
have called him something like that. Time had not dimmed her
regard for the old man she had seen for that brief moment at
Paddington Station. He was an old dear, and she thoroughly
approved of this latest manifestation of his supposed pride in
his offspring.
"Is that really your name--Algernon?"
"I cannot deny it."

"I think your father is a darling," said Ann inconsequently.
Jimmy had buried himself in the directory again.

From The Importance of Being Earnest by Ocsar Wilde:
CECILY. Are you called Algernon?
ALGERNON. I cannot deny it.
CECILY. Oh!
GWENDOLEN. Is your name really John?
JACK. [Standing rather proudly.] I could deny it if I liked. I could deny anything if I liked. But my name certainly is John. It has been John for years.

A very random sort of comment-- I love this connection-- but that is one of my favorite parts of The Importance of Being Earnest. When I did the show (playing Gwendolen), the fellow I played opposite was so very adorable as Jack-- he didn't try too hard to make him the stick-in-the-mud that most actors do. He was very warm and lovable... and the way he delivered that line was just magic. :D

"I could deny it if I liked. -takes a moment, looks off into the distance, pondering for a moment, eyebrows up- I could deny anything if I liked. -calls himself back- Yes. But my name certainly is John. It has been John for years."

Chels! I didn't know that you have a LiveJournal. I've just friended you.

I think that it's positively brilliant that you played Gwendolen. And that you had a sweetie-pie Jack (er, yes, that's the Very Learned Technical Name Applied by Literary Theorists, I'm sure). Your description of his pondering and eyebrows is perfect! :)
